Clinician Q & A
Answers to the most common questions from PBH clinicians about profiles, billing, credentialing, and more.
Getting Started
Psychological Behavioral Health, Inc. (PBH) is a California-based behavioral health platform. We operate a network of independent 1099 clinicians who are credentialed under PBH's group Tax ID Number (TIN) and National Provider Identifier (NPI). This model allows clinicians to see clients under major insurance plans without needing their own individual insurance contracts.
To join PBH, complete the PBH Billing Services interest form on the Clinician Portal. Once submitted, our team will review your credentials and reach out within 3–5 business days to discuss next steps, including completing a 1099 Independent Contractor Agreement and beginning the credentialing process.
No. Creating and maintaining a clinician profile in the PBH directory is completely free. There are no monthly fees, no setup costs, and no charges for profile updates. PBH earns its revenue through the billing services model — not by charging clinicians for directory access.
No. Any clinician in the United States may create a profile without signing up for PBH billing services. The directory and the billing service are independent — you can list your practice on PBH and receive client inquiries without ever using our billing infrastructure. Billing services are optional and discussed separately during the onboarding process.
PBH accepts a range of licensed and registered clinicians including LMFT, AMFT, LCSW, ACSW, LPCC, APCC, PhD, PsyD, PMHNP, FNP, and RN. Both fully licensed and registered associate clinicians (under supervision) are welcome to apply. All clinicians must hold a valid California license or registration in good standing.
Clinician Profiles
Click "Create Free Profile" on the Clinician Portal and complete the profile intake form. Include your photo, bio, specialties, insurance accepted, languages, availability, and education. Once submitted, our team will build your profile page and notify you when it is live — typically within 2–3 business days.
Click "Update Free Profile" on the Clinician Portal and complete the update form with the changes you'd like made. Be as specific as possible — for example, "Update my bio to the following text" or "Add Blue Shield to my insurance list." Our team will apply updates within 1–2 business days.
Use a professional headshot with a clean background. A square crop works best. The minimum recommended size is 400×400 pixels. JPG or PNG formats are accepted. A warm, approachable photo helps clients feel comfortable reaching out — avoid sunglasses, group photos, or highly filtered images.
New profiles are typically published within 2–3 business days of a complete submission. Updates to existing profiles are typically applied within 1–2 business days. You will receive an email confirmation once your profile is live or updated.
You may link your business website directly to your PBH clinician profile. The link will appear on your profile page so that prospective clients can learn more about your practice through both PBH and your own site.
Yes. Community members and agencies can email or call you directly through your PBH clinician profile. Your email address remains hidden on the profile itself — however, when you reply to inquiries, your email address will be visible in your response unless you choose to use an alias. You also have the option to display a business phone number; please consider carefully which number you want to publish, as it will be publicly visible on your profile.
Billing & Payments
PBH bills insurance on behalf of clinicians using PBH's group NPI and TIN. Claims are submitted through our billing team, and reimbursements are paid to PBH. Clinicians receive their contracted percentage of collected amounts on a semi-monthly basis — on the 15th and last day of each month.
Payments are processed on a semi-monthly schedule — on the 15th and the last day of each month. Payments reflect claims collected during the prior pay period. You will receive a payment summary detailing the sessions and amounts included in each payment. Direct deposit is the standard payment method.
PBH is currently contracted with: Aetna, Anthem Blue Cross, Blue Shield, Cigna / Evernorth, Gold Coast Health Plan, Health Net, Kaiser Permanente (SCAL), LA Care, Medi-Cal, Medicare, and Optum / United Healthcare. Self-pay and sliding scale services are also supported. Contracted payers may be updated over time — contact the billing team for the most current list.
Click "All Clinicians" in the upper-right corner of any page and complete the intake form, selecting PBH Billing Services (Optional). After review, our team will contact you to schedule a consultation. PBH offers a number of distinctive features that enhance our competitive billing model — we'll walk through them during the meeting and answer any questions you have. PBH Billing Services.
Credentialing
Clinicians are credentialed under PBH's group NPI and TIN rather than individually with each payer. PBH manages the credentialing process through Availity and other payer portals. Once credentialing is complete, you can begin seeing clients under the payers for which you are approved. Credentialing timelines vary by payer but typically range from 60–120 days.
Yes. All clinicians must have their own individual NPI (Type 1). If you do not yet have one, you can apply for free at the NPPES website (nppes.cms.hhs.gov). Your individual NPI is used in conjunction with PBH's group NPI when submitting claims.
Independence & Supervision
No. All clinicians affiliated with PBH are independent 1099 contractors, not employees. You set your own schedule, determine your own clinical approach, and maintain full clinical independence. PBH provides billing infrastructure and a directory platform — it does not direct or control your clinical practice.
Clinical supervision for associate clinicians is managed through Psychological Behavioral Team, Inc. (PBT), a related entity. If you are a registered associate requiring BBS-approved supervision hours, contact PBH administration for information about supervision arrangements available through PBT.
As an independent clinician, you are responsible for maintaining your own clinical documentation in compliance with California law, BBS requirements, and payer documentation standards. PBH recommends using SimplePractice or an equivalent HIPAA-compliant EHR. Progress notes, treatment plans, and intake evaluations should meet payer audit requirements. PBH may share documentation guidelines for your reference.
